As building contractors based in East Kent, PA Hollingworth & Co have found that often our residential customers need help to guide them through the complex procedures of design, planning approvals and local authority building control. We can help you decide what is the best way to achieve the result you are looking for and options available to you when altering or improving your home.
For further information see our downloadable guides on our FAQ page.
If your project is on the large side and you have a set of detailed drawings, PA Hollingworth & Co can provide a full and detailed quotation to carry out the work. If, however, your project is smaller or you do not have the drawings and do not know how to proceed, contact us and let us guide you through the process of planning applications or building control approval if needed.
If a smaller job then we will provide you with a detailed ‘Specification of Works’ containing a price breakdown and drawings (If needed) to make your understanding of what work is to be carried out, clear and concise.
We will provide you with commencement and completion dates along with an understanding of what order we intend to carry out the work, to enable you to plan around us. On larger projects we will provide a full Programme of Works which will detail all trades and the expected running order of the project.
Communication
We have fully staffed offices near Sandwich in Kent and our qualified and helpful staff are on hand to answer your queries between 7.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Whether we are currently working on your project, or you are a potential new customer and want to chat about a possible change or new project, we understand the importance of your being able to communicate with us. We also have available a comfortable warm meeting room and hot coffee, when required, and you would be welcome to visit at any time.
Your project will be appointed a foreman/supervisor who will work with you to avoid mistakes and to facilitate any changes you may wish to make. One of our Site Managers will also oversee the project on an “as needed” basis for smaller projects or provide a full-time presence on a larger project. This is all part of our commitment to communicate with you at all times and to reduce problems throughout your project. All foreman/supervisors and managers carry the necessary Health and safety qualifications to keep your project moving forward safely whilst providing you with peace of mind, knowing you are meeting your legal obligations as an employer.
Construction Staff
We directly employ over 90 per cent of our site operatives, most of whom are, City & Guilds qualified, long-serving tradesmen and the remainder are working towards the same goal. We are proud of the fact that several have worked with us for many years and we have a successful record of retaining tradesmen and apprentices in all trades. We regularly receive positive comments, letters and emails from customers who have enjoyed having them around their homes and complementing us, and them, on their exemplary behaviour and workmanship. We are all very proud of our company and the workmanship and service we provide, however, it would be ridiculous to suggest we get everything right 100 per cent of the time, but we continue to try very hard to succeed in all areas of our business, as often as possible, and improve where needed.
You can rest assured of, not only our quality of workmanship but of our commitment to you as a customer. We are fully insured against damage to your property whilst we are carrying out any work, and any injury to you, your family or members of the public affected by our operations. We have an exemplary record in Health and Safety and continue to direct a large proportion of our budget to continued training in all matters of safety and workmanship.
Payment
Our payment terms are 4 weeks in arrears (Or less if only a small project lasting less than 4 weeks). No money up front or deposits, you pay every 4 weeks for what has been done and we will provide you with a detailed breakdown of this each month for your information.
Changes or Additional Work
Whilst every effort will be made to stick closely to the drawings and specification for your job, sometimes things can change and are beyond our control, or you the client may request changes or additional work. Some examples are as follows;
- The drawings indicate 1.0m deep foundations, however, the Building Control Officer requests we go a little deeper to better ground conditions. We would then need to excavate and dispose of more material than quoted and provide more concrete fill.
- Un-expected obstructions buried underground
- Unforeseen damage to existing structure which could not be seen at the time of quoting, such as damaged drains.
- Customer requests additional power points, or additional work of any kind.
Any and all changes to the quoted works will be explained to you the customer; quoted for by us, and require your written agreement to proceed. You will not be presented with additional costs you did not expect to receive, and your monthly Valuation will project the ongoing final figure for your information to enable you to budget accurately. Sometimes changes can also incur financial savings, and these will also be clearly indicated on your monthly Valuations.
