A project which was very personal to our company, the Hollingworth family and many of the staff at PA Hollingworth & Co ltd as we are members, and in many cases current and ex-players at the club. The new pavilion was something which had been a long time in the making and, following the amalgamation of the two clubs in Deal, it finally has become a reality.
The project was to provide a steel frame structure which, both covered the roof of the existing pavilion which had once been the Royal Marines cricket pavilion, and extended beyond to provide the new club bar and kitchen area. The old pavilion was also to be re-ordered and converted into changing rooms and toilets and showers to service the two rugby pitches on the old Drill field opposite. The design was carried out by a local, now retired, architect and engineering by a long-standing club member.
The build of a steel portal frame on pad foundations stands over a ground bearing slab. An old air-raid shelter which was located under the footprint of the bar social area also had to be exposed and infilled. The old flat roof of the existing pavilion remains in situ as an attic storage area and the new portal frame and pitched roof covering of Kingspan insulated sheeting now covers both the new and old buildings. A large glass dormer-like window to the front of the new pavilion provides both light and drama to the front of the building and the vaulted nature of the roof provides an airy and pleasant socialising area to the internal space. A glass frontage to the bar area provides a great view of the playing surfaces and a covered entrance some cover from the weather on a winters match day. Heating is provided by wet underfloor heating
The bar servery area was located at one end of the new area and PA Hollingworth & Co Ltd provided this at no cost to the club. Along the rear of the building ladies WC’s and a kitchen area for providing after match teas and a meeting room complete the tour.
Club members have enjoyed the bright new spaces and the project was completed in time for the 2006 season and on budget. Further works were carried out to the building in 2019 by PA Hollingworth & Co to alter the layout internally and provide a larger kitchen and preparation area along with increased seating areas in the bar area. At the same time, the décor was refurbished and the building is all the better for the changes made.
