P A Hollingworth & Co Ltd were contracted to restore a very wind-swept tower and roof garden which provides lift and stairs access to in excess of 30 private apartments, including the external refurbishment of stairs/lift shaft and rooftop garden.
36m Access scaffolding totalling 17 lifts, sat on top of a 40m cliff top was certainly a challenge! When the wind blows up there it can get very hairy. To add to this the lack of floor area around the tower meant that the site set-up was compact, to say the least.
The exterior brickwork was completely refurbished, damaged bricks cut out and replaced and a full grind out of all mortar and re-point. This work was very necessary as its exposed location overlooking the sea meant that the lack of mortar in some areas was extreme.
Refurbishment of aluminium windows which were leaking and failing, including external redecoration and replacement of any damaged glass.
Replacement of the front entrance paving.
Removal of the old roof garden glass screen/balustrade and replacement with a new infinity glass screen which looks fantastic without spoiling the extensive views from this location above everything else in the Folkestone area. Restoration of the stainless steel ventilation shafts and a re-wire to provide new and contemporary lighting for night time use.
