To safely expand a Sure Start Children’s Centre in Thanet without closure, making maximum use of the outside courtyard and adding both a kitchen and DDA compliant WC.
This was a 66m² court yard, surrounded on 3 sides by existing single face brickwork walls to the existing building. As a children’s centre the
building remained in full occupation throughout the project so Health Safety and Welfare of both construction staff, the centre staff and visitors was paramount throughout the term of the project. The finished space provide was divided up into a large open multi-purpose space with 2 WCs (one of which was DDA compliant) and a food preparation area in the form of an open plan kitchen and utility.
The whole site was originally constructed over an old landfill site, so piling the foundations was the only viable option with a reinforced, cast concrete floor over. The roof structure was a hipped, trussed roof supported on the old external walls on three sides and the new front wall. Internally the complete 66m² was fitted with a suspended ceiling and timber stud walls to form the rooms. The complete floor was finished in coved welded vinyl sheet and the walls paint finish over the face brickwork.
We are very pleased with the outcome, the workmanship was excellent, the men very helpful and polite and the extra space we now have is great. On time and on budget, great!
