Construction industry sees growth but rising costs Thu Jul 28 15:13:27 2011 The UK building industry continued to grow in March, but raw materials price rises hit a 31-month high, research suggests.
Rising costs were driven by fuel, oil and steel, the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for the sector said.
Industry activity registered a level of 56.4 for March, well above the expected 54.9. A level above 50 indicates expansion.
However, the survey also suggested that new order growth had slowed.
Still wary!
Worryingly, new order growth slowed more notably than that of activity in March, pointing to a slowdown in activity over the coming months, especially if the pattern is sustained. Anecdotal evidence also suggested industry members remain concerned about the likely impact of government spending cuts on future business.
Confidence among constructors remained subdued, slipping to a three-month low, with many companies still wary about the possible impacts from public spending cuts.
Despite this, the employment in the cyclical industry appears to have bottomed out.
The survey found the rate of reduction of staffing levels had fallen to its slowest rate since job cuts in the sector began nine months ago.

The two directors Peter Hollingworth and Peter Hunnisett are both local men and are delighted that they are able to celebrate their 30th anniversary in business together, in the same month that there is a Royal Wedding. Whist they would agree, the occasion is not so auspicious, it is a great achievement none the less and they will still be celebrating all the same, although due to the credit crunch, it will be beer rather than champagne that flows!
The last 30 years have seen a vast amount of change both personally and within the development of their company. Both of the Peters have married and have each had three children successfully reach their adulthood. Peter Hollingworth is proud to announce that his youngest son William has now joined the company and is helping to develop the electrical division, whilst Peter Hunnisett’s eldest daughter Samantha has already made a great success running another of the Hollingworth group of companies, Oasis Swimming Pools.www.oasispoolproducts.co.uk.

The two Pete’s agree their biggest asset is their loyal and expert employees and the many letters and compliments received from their customers continually confirm this to be so.
PA Hollingworth and Co have purchased further land in Woodnesbrough to allow for expansion with all of their “Family” of companies and look forward to providing a high quality service in the future to all their customers both new and old.

Great News a New Road At Last! Tue May 11 09:13:28 2010 Spade has finally met soil in the latest construction phase of the East Kent Access road.
Work will start at Stonar Cut, near Richborough power station, from where the road will run north to a roundabout at Sevenscore. There it will split in two.
One section of the new road will carry on north to a roundabout on the A299, which will be turned into a dual carriageway west to Minster roundabout.
The second stretch of road from Sevenscore will run to the Lord of the Manor junction.
Not a second too soon! This road has been costing P.A.Hollingworth & Co Ltd and many other local traders money for years with their staff stuck in traffic for hours a day. P.A.Hollingworth & Co building contractors of Sandwich, have been serving East Kent for over 30 years and never has the problem of traffic congestion been so important. In this current economic climate every penny counts, and the importance of efficient working practices never more poignant. We can only hope that this new road network, once complete will open up our area and decrease our lost hours spent in traffic jams.
Just a final thought, could not, should not, this road have been constructed before the new shopping/industrial area in Thanet was constructed and Pfizer and Ramsgate docks increased their operations or is the writer just being too simplistic. Perhaps the people of Thanet, Sandwich, Deal, Canterbury and the surrounding villages in East Kent, all of whom make use of this road, should be asked what they think!
The Construction Industry Comes Out of Recession Thu Apr 8 15:05:33 2010 The construction industry came out of recession today on the back of a boost in public sector work, according to preliminary Government statistics.
The Office of National Statistics figures show construction output rose in the third quarter of 2009 by 2 per cent compared to Q2 2009, with a quarter on quarter growth in output indicating the end of recession.
While going into recession is technically defined as two negative consecutive quarters of growth, the end of a recession is recorded at the time of the first growth quarter-on-quarter.
But the figures still show the industry’s output of £25 billion last quarter is 9 per cent down on Q3 2008’s figure of £27.3 billion.
Repair and maintenance work totalled £11.4 billion, up 10 per cent on Q2’s £10.3 billion.
But that was off set by a fall in new work of 4 per cent from £14.2 billion to £13.6 billion.
The biggest growth sectors were public sector non-housing repair and maintenance work, up 26 per cent, and public sector new housing which was up 14 per cent.
By contrast the biggest faller was private sector new commercial work, down 11 per cent.
Glenigan economics director Allan Wilen said: “The overall rise in third quarter output will provide some cheer for the battered construction industry.
“While the main source of growth has been in repair and maintenance activity, the figures also indicate that the rise Glenigan has seen in new government project starts since April is feeding through to the industry’s output.
“However, private sector new work has continued to weaken and overall industry output is still 9 per cent down on a year ago.
“Furthermore the current rise in repair and maintenance work may also prove short-lived. In particular public sector repair and maintenance work will come under increased budgetary pressure over the next year.”
Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors chief economist Simon Rubinsohn added: “The 2 per cent gain in the headline output number in the third quarter masks a significant divergence between new build and repair and maintenance work.
“While output of the former continues to slip, the latter has now increased for two consecutive quarters.”
